DJ Kay Lyn
As a college student in Ashland, OR., Kay Lyn used the living expenses left over from her student loans to throw her first party. It was a runaway success, and with the profits going to buy her first set of Technics she started collecting records. After three years of playing at the local bars, she moved to the house music Mecca of San Francisco. With help from a trip to Miami for WMC 2003 she broke into the SF scene, playing many bars and clubs. Influenced by the combination of great record stores and a parade of international DJs, Kay Lyn’s style progressed from SF’s dancefloor-friendly grooves to gritty, bumpin’ tech house.
Armed with an edgier sound Kay Lyn returned to her hometown of Portland in 2006. She wasted no time bangin’ it out at clubs and all-night parties with a futuristic vibe and killer look. Always ahead of the curve, she pioneered the European-influenced explosion of first electro-house and then indie dance in Portland. A late comer to the world of digital music, Kay Lyn has made up for lost time, amassing an arsenal of tracks spanning house music’s roots to its future. Always a dancer, her connection to house music is fun yet serious and always pushing into the future. In 2011 Kay Lyn and Husband Aaron Bridges, also a veteran Portland DJ, formed Dressed To Kill It, a duo focused on the marriage of music and fashion. This was an extension of her training in fashion design as well as years of producing and DJing fashion shows and parties for Diesel, Adidas, Puma, and Betsey Johnson. Dressed To Kill It is a vehicle for presenting an alternative to the t-shirt-dominated DJ scene, blending futuristic music with impeccable fashion. Long an aspiring vocalist and songwriter, Kay Lyn's focus for 2012 will be making the transition from DJ to producer, refining her vocal talent, and releasing original tracks. Sistafist |
LMC
Rapper, skateboarder, 2nd hand fashion connoisseur, Jill of all trades. She has dabbled in photography, video editing, filming, and art. LMC was born in a small town in McCall, Idaho to two hippie parents who made a living off of odd jobs. She didn’t learn to read til 4th grade and never attended a full year of school until 7th grade. Her years growing up were spent with 3 siblings and her parents, living out of a 60s volkswagen van In Mexico, at rainbow gatherings and barter fares, traveling across Europe and Africa living out of backbacks, eating off a one burner camping stove. She first found rap when she was rummaging thru her older brothers tape case around the age of 8. Some of her influences include 2pac, TLC, Madonna, NWA, Nirvana, ACDC, Bone Thugs N Harmony, GnR, Ace of Base, Alanis Morisette, Andre Nickatina, The Misfits, Iron Maiden,Three6Mafia, UGK, Ice Cube, David Allen Coe, OutKast, Eminem, Cyndi Lauper, Debbie Harry, Beastie Boys, Biggie, Mac Dre, Crime Mobb and Goodie Mob. LMC started recording in late 2011 and has since released 2 albums, The Lurk EP ( as elleMC) and Huntin 4 Haters ( as LMC). She is currently working on her 3rd free album and spending time between Portland, OR. and LA.
Slyer than every beast of the field, Portland based, lady-fronted, synth-heavy SistaFist will make you want to do more than eat an apple verboten. True, they first made an appearance when they called Adam a pussy and opened Eve's eyes; but they have since made a name for themselves in the Northwest opening for acts from Mickey Avalon and Lords of Acid to Men and Japanther. They have been persuading audiences at Music Fest NW and Lady Fest. And persuasive they are. SistaFist will knock you out and steal your loot, cut your throat and skin your flute, and leave you begging for more because they really are so fucking cute. Undulating on stage in the most divulging of costumes, (save for the occasional metal t-shirt), MCs Em Snatch, Bad Dre Dre and C-Bag create tiny explosions in the pants and minds of their audience. Unlike too many mainstream female artists however, they don't pose themselves as the new sex idols, but inspire the crowd to get sexy. They are far from the festishized female superstars we are used to; they are close and sweaty, spitting gritty lyrics and inflicting even grittier dance moves. In other words, SistaFist is a pure gold conduit for sexual energy. Perhaps it is best to end this story with a bit of etymology: SistaFist is a retelling of the Sisyphus myth where three muses spit in the gods' faces and embrace the struggle and play of life. Every time these three lady MCs step on to stage, backed by bewitching synth beats, they affirm that the struggle towards the heights is enough to fill anyone's heart.
